Issuer Highlights
- National Highways Authority of India was set up by an act of the Parliament, NHAI Act, 1988 “An Act to provide for the constitution of an Authority for the development, maintenance and management of national highways and for matter connected therewith or incidental thereto”
- It has been entrusted with National Highways Development Project, which along with other minor projects and they have 50329 km of National Highways for the purpose of development, maintenance and management
- The total length of NH (including expressways) as of December 2020 was 1,32,499 kms. While Highways/Expressways constitute only about 1.7% of the length of all roads, they carry about 40% of the road traffic
- NHAI is mandated to implement National Highways Development Project (NHDP) which is India’s largest-ever Highways Project in a phased manner
- NHAI receives funding through Government support in form of capital base, cess fund, additional budgetary support, capital grant, maintenance grant, ploughing back of toll revenue, through a loan from multilateral agencies and market borrowings
- As the driving force of the highway sector, NHAI completed 3380 km of Highways in FY 18-19 while 2,222 km was awarded in the same year. In terms of land acquisition, 25,980 Ha was notified and 13,982 was in possession as of March 2019
- In FY 18-19, NHAI had 1111 employees to manage projects portfolio of more than 55,000 kms. They had 3 tier system i.e. HQ, Regional Offices and Project Implementation Units for supervising and close monitoring of the projects
